/ Leon honoured by What Car? as Britain’s best used car
/ Overall success, plus category wins, for Leon as ‘Best Used Family car’ and Leon ST as ‘Best Used Estate Car’
/ Judges praise SEAT’s best-selling model for its all-round appeal in terms of practicality, style, driving enjoyment and fantastic value for money

Extra space has had to be made in the SEAT Leon’s crowded trophy cabinet to make room for another top accolade today, the What Car? Used Car of the Year Award for 2018.

If you’re not in the market for a brand new set of wheels, the professionals at What Car? reckon the superb Leon – SEAT’s current global best-seller – is the ideal used purchase. Their verdict declares the current generation model to be both the Best Used Family Car and Best Used Car overall.

Adding extra gloss to the Leon’s reputation, the ST (Sports Tourer) version triumphed in the Best Used Estate Car classes in the “nearly new” models, one to three years old.

Dispensing with the traditional awards presentation, What Car? broke the news of this year’s honours this evening in a “virtual ceremony,” revealing its winners model by model via a Twitter stream, using the hashtag #WhatCarAwards.

Alex Robbins, Haymarket Automotive’s Used Cars Editor, said: “The third-generation SEAT Leon is a car which gets the basics right and yet delivers so much more besides. It’s a great family car, with plenty of room in both the front and rear, and has a well-sized boot and plenty of storage space. It rides well, it’s quiet, and it’s comfortable to spend time in. But having ticked those boxes the Leon delivers layer upon layer of further talent: it’s a delight to drive; it’s far more stylish than any family hatchback has a right to be; and you get a great range of engines to choose from, whether it’s an economical diesel or a punchy petrol you’re after.”

Beyond these excellent qualities, it was the Leon’s value for money that gave it a defining advantage over the competition for the title.

“With prices undercutting those of similarly desirable rivals, it’s a veritable bargain right now. This is despite the fact that so many used Leons come particularly well-equipped, with new-car buyers having specified the desirable Technology Pack. Throw in a strong reliability score in our latest Reliability Survey, and you have a used car which is hard to resist,” Robbins explained.

Richard Harrison, SEAT UK Director, said: “The third-generation Leon transformed the SEAT brand pretty much overnight. It represents the best of what we aim to deliver in terms of design, engineering, technology and driver-appeal. This What Car? award is a tremendous honour for us, as it shows we are giving both new and used car customers a car they can trust, with lasting quality and excellent value.”
